Norbertus Teeuwen (1910-1973) founded the Augustinian Historical Institute in 1951 in order to give a concrete shape to the study of the history of the Augustinian Order and the spirituality of Saint Augustine. The Augustinian Priory of Saint Thomas of Villanova at Heverlee-Louvain became its centre. The scientific review Augustiniana is the Institute’s main publication. It focuses on the study of the life and thought of Augustine of Hippo, the history of the Order, the doctrine of Augustinian authors and of Jansenism. The contributions to Augustiniana are written in different mayor languages.
The Augustinian bibliography (Répertoire bibliographique de saint Augustin 1950-1960), edited by Tarsicius J. van Bavel OSA and F. van der Zande OSA, is continued by Jozef Van Houtem OSA. This bibliography is especially known for its analytical index, so that any theme easily can be found.
In 1996 a new historical series was commenced, the Instrumenta Augustiniana, treating aspects of the Order in the Low Countries. Since 1986 – the 16th anniversary of Augustine’s conversion, the Institute organises an Augustinusdag (Day of Augustine) every year, with the intention to make the spirituality of Augustine available for religious and other Christians. The lectures held on such an Augustinusdag are being published by the Institute. Also, the Augustinian Historical Institute publishes books concerning spirituality and history.
